Getting dslr lens, and like the look of my film slr's 50mm lens Should i look at the equivalent focal length?

You answered your own question. Your film camera would capture the image on a piece of 35mm film. Your sensor is an APS-C sensor. Smaller than the film. The crop is about 1.5x so a 35mm lens on your Sony would be similar to your 50mm on a SLR.
