Wedding question....is this common?

My soon to be wife and I want a particular minister to marry us, but he is older and doesn't have an active license anymore so we were thinking of going down to the courthouse about a week prior to our ceremony and getting legally married in front of a judge and then having our ceremony so our unlicensed minister friend could conduct it. Is this a common practice?
